Meet Mary Lim, GCOMM’s Operations Manager. Mary has been with GCOMM since 2006 in various roles, including sales support and account management. In her current position, Mary is responsible for managing the requirements of many aspects of GCOMM’s business.
Tell me a little bit about your background and education.
I’m from Malaysia and I first came to Australia to complete my Bachelor of Psychology at University of South Australia. After graduating, I received a scholarship from Bond University to study Master of Corporate Communication and Master of IT Management. I have since lived on the Gold Coast for 8 years.
When did you start working at GCOMM?
I’ve been working at GCOMM since December 2006.
Did you have any IT background before that?
The IT background that I have is the knowledge that I gained while studying for my Master of IT Management. I can still recall that I was so stressed studying programming in uni that I lost 5 kilos!
After graduating, I worked for a web development company as a Project Manager.
What was your role when you first started working at GCOMM? Has it changed over the years?
I started working at GCOMM in 2006 in a sales support role. I assisted the sales team in developing quotes. After 6 months, I was promoted to be an Account Manager and managed approximately 100 customers.
I was an Account Manager until last year. When I returned from my maternity leave, there were some internal changes that took place and I am now the Operations Manager. In this role, I work very closely with various teams within the organisation which makes it very challenging but interesting.
What are some of the main strengths of GCOMM, according to you?
I think it is the people and the culture of the business. You don’t mind putting in that extra hour, or working extra hard because you see the company grow and you want to grow with the company. The people treat you with respect; you have a lot of support from everyone.
Since being a mother, I have the flexibility to work from home, and I don’t think you can get that flexibility anywhere else. Having an employer who appreciates and respects you is really important. You wake up in the morning, go to work, and spend a lot of time there, and you’re happy doing that.
The other main strength of GCOMM is that everybody’s thoughts and input are very valuable in the process of growing the business successfully. Everybody has a chance to voice their opinion, make constructive suggestions, in order to help improve things in the business.
What are some of the things that distinguish GCOMM from its competitors in the marketplace?
GCOMM is innovative and has a proven history of delivering successful business outcomes for our customers. We partner with top-tier carriers and have a great customer base that we work closely with. The company is also very active in marketing its products and services. Earlier this year, we launched The GCOMM Post, online magazine dedicated to providing news and opinions on the current trends in the IT industry. This is just one of the many ways we strive to differentiate ourselves from the competition.
What are your favourite aspects of working at GCOMM?
Challenging environment, people recognising my ability and giving me responsibilities. I’m not just doing one thing; I’m always challenged to do more. I can grow continuously, rather than just remaining stagnant. My mind is stimulated and I keep going. That’s what is great about it.
What has been your most memorable experience at the company over the years?
I started off with GCOMM after graduating from uni. Now I am married and have a son. The company has always been there for me. They are more like a family to me, as opposed to just colleagues. We have that sort of relationship with each other, GCOMM has that care factor. Every year is a memorable experience; there are always highlights when we’re all together, whether it’s going out for dinner, attending shows, etc.
Do you guys all get together often?
We try to get together and catch up with everyone. We have our monthly casual catch up with everyone which is very nice.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I was lucky enough to win the Employee of the year award. I put my heart into work and truly enjoy working with everyone in this company. It makes a lot of difference when you enjoy doing what you do. When it comes to personal life, my greatest accomplishment is being a mother and I feel very blessed to have a supportive family. Nothing in the world can change that.
What are some of your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time (when you do have some free time)?
I love traveling and enjoy spending time with family and friends. These days, I get together with other mothers and enjoy play groups. It’s very different from what I used to do in my free time before having my baby, but I am loving every moment of it.
What are your plans for the future? How do you see GCOMM in the near future?
I see us becoming more successful. We are a successful business but I see us achieving a whole lot more. We’re going through some reorganisation and implementation of different systems, which will enable GCOMM to realise its full potential.♦ End
