This month you have an opportunity to meet Vicki Honey, one of GCOMM’s Administration team members.
Tell me a little bit about your professional background.
I was in child care for about 10 years. I completed my Diploma in Child Care and Early Education. I worked in various rooms covering ages 0 – 5 for 8 years and then became a Director. As Director I was responsible for all aspects of running a 400 place child care centre, it seemed like the job never ended, it was tough. Managing 25+ staff members was challenging and stressful.
I met a lot of wonderful families and friends whilst working in child care. I have kept in contact with many children with the help of social networks like Facebook, it’s amazing to chat with them and see what they are up to. Many of these children were only 2 and 3 years old whilst in my care and now they are 16-17 years old.
One of my best friends was the parent of a child in my care over 9 years ago.
After 10 years of child care I decided I needed a change and a new direction in my career.
When did you start working at GCOMM?
Four years ago. A good family friend Amy Giles told me there was a position coming up .The position was in Accounts which happened to be Amy’s role.
I felt that this role was just the thing I needed and applied for the job.
Luckily for me, I was offered the position, and have not looked back since.
Has your role changed over the years?
Yes, it has. When I first started I was doing accounts receivable; that expanded into handling both accounts receivable and accounts payable, doing the data entry, etc. Now my role is sort of mid-management, working with Senior Management of the company and the Administration team. I also do work related to customers queries and requests and interact with them on a daily basis.
The role hasn’t changed greatly since I first started but there are different things, such as business operational changes, that you always have to adapt to. I try to make everything run smoothly.
What are your favourite aspects of working at GCOMM?
The atmosphere, the family environment. Every now and then there may be disagreements, of course, this is more healthy debate than anything else but there’s no animosity toward anybody in the company and we get on with the job. Everyone gets along really well, on both professional and personal levels.
Was it easy to fit in when you first started working?
Yes, everyone was really nice and welcoming. They took me on board straight away, showed me the ropes on all the aspects regarding my job. Everyone was really understanding, patient and approachable. We all had and still have the common goal of working together to make the company grow stronger, bigger and better.
What are some of the most enjoyable things about your job?
I really enjoy working with Glenn, our Chief Operations Officer. He has taught me a lot. I didn’t really know too much about running an IT business and he has been a great resource in the past four years.
I think I have good relationships with all the customers and that is another thing I like about my job.
Recently we had a few structural changes going on within in our sales team; I’ve been trying to help out the team as much as possible, in order to make the transition process easier for everyone. In general I like helping, being there for everybody and trying to make their jobs easier; I never like to make things hard for anyone.
Nothing really jumps to mind straight away. It’s not a difficult job but it’s not easy either. There are a lot of aspects that are not specific to my job description but I don’t think about it that way. We’re all here to do our best and make GCOMM even more successful.
Most memorable experience at the company over the years?
All the social events we have are pretty memorable. We have really good Christmas parties, family functions and informal gatherings. Being able to relax and get together with fellow staff outside of the office is great; everyone lets their hair down and has a great time. One event in particular and rather jolly was when a (GCOMM) fellow thought it was a good idea to fling me around on the dance floor, not an easy task staying on your feet in stilettos whilst doing the jitterbug!
What are some of your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time, when you do have some free time?
Like a majority of the GCOMM crew I love camping, I also enjoy reading, and scuba diving. I think that’s why we get along so well, we all have very similar interests and like the outdoors. I don’t think there’s one of us that doesn’t like getting outside and doing something, whether it is four wheel driving or going to the beach.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on staying at GCOMM for quite a while. I am really happy here and think that we all work very well together. I can only see the company growing from here. We’ve had bumps along the road, came across quite a few curve balls and we’ve managed to dodge them successfully and have gone from strength to strength.
I can honestly say that GCOMM is a fantastic company to work for, and I believe it would be hard to find another like it, we are very lucky to have a team that works so cohesively together.♦ End
